Stop the Press! XeroShoes have just announced the release of the new Umara Z-Trail sandal. I was lucky enough to get a preview pair and OMG, they’re awesome.

As a special treat for Beginning Barefoot fans, I’ve put together a short review video so you can see what they’re all about.

In a nutshell:

  • They’re very lightweight

  • They Float!
  • They’re the best sandals XeroShoes yet!

The Z-Trails launch officially on March 11th, but if you’re quick, you can take a sneak peek and enter to win a pair of your own!

I bought the Z-Trek last year. I’m wondering if the Z-Trek were supposed to be good for trail hikes, and that less cushioning and better ground feel was a good thing, why did they put more cushioning in this sandal?

I notice that I don’t particularly like walking in the Z-Treks on pavement – feels like too much impact. But I thought I was supposed to learn how to walk in less-cushioned shoes because it is better for me?

Just a little confused, because in some ways I think I would like the Z-Trails because of the extra-cushioning. Have you walked in both? Would you wear the Trails for one type of conditions and the Treks for others? Just trying to decide if I should get a pair.

    • Honestly, the Z-Treks are a decent sandal, but they have a much more minimalist feel…they’re far less forgiving and don’t really provide any cushioning. I like mine for running as the improved ground feel is helpful, bit I actually don’t walk much in them.

The new Z-Trails, however feel much more put together. I’ve been wearing them every day since I got them and have walked heaps in them. They are far more comfortable for walking. They have a really nice combination of padding and flexibility, so you still feel the ground, but it’s not as unpleasant when you step on a rogue stone, And they don’t tire your feet.

Thanks for your question. I think I may put together a more detailed written review to shed a not more light on the Z-trails and how they differ to previous models.

Thanks, that helped. Sounds like the trails are just what I need. The only problem now is that the largest women’s size are too short (they’ve made the trails a little shorter than the treks) and the men’s size that are long enough for my foot are too wide. I guess I don’t know what constitutes too wide, but there’s about 1/4″ to 1/2″ of extra width around the border from my foot. How would the extra width affect my walking?

      • Hmm that’s a good question. I would think it depends on how tightly you strap them. Personally I like mine tight, but this may cause the edges to pull up if the sandals are too wide. What I’d recommend doing is giving them a call or email as they’re the experts and can help you get the best fit. They’re on 303-447-3100 or support@xeroshoes.com. They’ve got excellent customer support, so I’m sure they’ll be able to help out!
